How to Prepare for an Abortion Pill

Thinking about the Abortion Pill? Read this first...
If you’re pregnant and weighing your options, you’ve probably heard about the abortion pill. But before moving forward, there are a few important things to understand so you can make a safe and informed decision. Need to talk now? You can text a nurse anonymously and for free at (251) 297-3160.
Medical Abortion Checklist
1. Be Certain YOu Are Actually Pregnant
This might seem obvious, but in the stress of the moment, it's easy to assume. The first step is to confirm your pregnancy with a lab-quality test and an ultrasound.
You should never take the abortion pill unless a medical professional confirms you’re pregnant. Taking it without this confirmation can be dangerous and ineffective.
2. Know the Status and Stage of Fetal Development
About 10% to 20% of pregnancies end in miscarriage,1 and sometimes your body hasn’t passed the tissue yet—even though a pregnancy test still reads positive.
That’s why an ultrasound is so important. It can confirm that the pregnancy is developing and not ectopic (growing outside the uterus).2 It also tells you how far along you are.
The FDA approves the abortion pill only up to 70 days (10 weeks) after your last period,3 so knowing the timing is key.
3. Make Sure THis is YOur Decision
A pregnancy can affect many people in your life, and you may be getting pressure from different directions—partners, friends, or family.
But this is your decision, and no one has the right to force or manipulate you into an abortion. You are protected by law from being coerced.
If you're feeling pressured or unsure, you're not alone. Alpha Women's Resource Center offers confidential, judgment-free support. Our team is here to listen, answer questions honestly, and walk with you through your options.
4. Know The Risks
Like any medical procedure, abortion comes with potential risks—physically and emotionally.
For example, if you have an untreated STI, the procedure (especially a surgical abortion) could cause it to spread and lead to serious complications like Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID). That can increase your risk for infertility or future pregnancy issues.4
It's crucial to understand that an abortion is irreversible. Therefore, it's essential to feel firm and confident in your decision before proceeding. You may experience emotional or spiritual distress and regret following the procedure.
